K9  Nose Works
The sport of K9 Nose Work is designed to develop dog’s natural scenting
abilities by using their desire to hunt and their love of toys, food and exercise.
After passing the introduction to noseworks, when the dogs discover their
passion for *hunt*, they are introduced to odor of natural essential oil (Odor
Recognition Test (ORT)- sweet birch NW1, aniseed NW2, clove bud NW3)
and detection/targeting the scent in interior building, exterior area and vehicle
search.

It’s a great way for any dog to have fun, build confidence, team-work and burn
lots of mental and physical energy.
The searches are run one by one, allowing the dog to focus without pressure and
distraction.
The dog should locate a hidden target scent and alert the handler to its exact
whereabouts in the environment.

First, the dog is encouraged to explore multiple open boxes for the scent of a
hidden reward — usually a savory treat or a coveted toy for chasing or tugging.
Search difficulty is gradually increased by changing environmental variables:
closing the boxes, raising the height of the hide, introducing varied objects to
the search environment and eventually moving the search outside of the box.
While the dog catches on to the game and builds drive for searching, the target
odor is paired with the reinforcing  treat.
